Why do we have nuclear plants?

when they can blow up, like Chernobyl and now the one in Japan, and cause radiation to deform and mutate human beings? I asked my science teacher, and she said we have 103 in the United States. I mean what the HELL is wrong with people, am I the only one that thinks eventually they will all F*ck up, considering they were made by humans and prone to human error, man isn't perfect??
