I can not put my battery icon on in taskbar, MS Vista?

It disappeared a while ago, now I can not tell when my battery is running out. If I go to "Task bar and Start Menu Properties", in the notification area I can see where it says "Power" icon check box, but it si inhibited (it is gray) so I can not check it. Help!!!
